On Proteus: Proteus (Πρωτεύς, "the First," "the Primordial") is the Old Man of the Sea, one of the most ancient beings in Greek mythology. Son of Poseidon (or of Oceanus and Tethys in earlier traditions), he is the Shepherd of the sea creatures on the Island of Pharos near Egypt. He possesses total knowledge of past, present, and future, and the ability to assume any form at will: lion, serpent, leopard, boar, water, tree, fire. He reveals the truth only to those who are strong enough to hold him through all his transformations. This is the central mystery of Proteus: truth is given only to those who persist through every change and every illusion. Menelaus seized him on the shores of Pharos and held fast through every metamorphosis, and Proteus, unable to escape, spoke the truth that guided the king home. The Goetic tradition preserved him as Dantalion, a Duke who appears with all the faces of humanity, holds a Book of total knowledge, reads and changes the thoughts of mortals, and radiates a blue aura. The many faces are his infinite forms. The Book is his omniscience. The blue is the colour of the deepest sea. The Name returns.

They are truthful because Proteus is incapable of deception once he has been properly invoked. They are elegant because the forms he takes are ordered and meaningful, arranged for the understanding of the seer. They are helpful because they serve the growth of the soul, revealing the path forward and the dangers to be avoided. The altered states associated with Proteus are those of deep meditation, ritual trance, and visionary practice: the states in which the surface mind yields to the depth and the truth beneath becomes visible.
